Why do we need a year dedicated to Engineering?
Fortunately, the government has recognised, there are fewer of our younger generations showing an interest in becoming engineers of the future, with a shortfall of qualified engineering graduates and skilled technicians.
With this realisation came the reality that something needs to be done in order to make a change and therefore 2018 will be The Year of Engineering #YoE
So, What Is The Year Of Engineering?
Dedicating 2018 as the Year of Engineering, HM Government are joining forces with partners within the industry. The aim of the campaign is to alter perceptions, to inspire and motivate our younger generations. Showing them what it is like to be an engineer and to highlight the broad spectrum of creative engineering careers available to them.
The initiatives fundamental aim is to raise the profile of engineering amongst primary aged school children up to graduates. This will be achieved by working alongside schools and families, to improve the understanding of what engineers do and to increase the appeal of an engineering career by raising awareness of the incredible opportunities our youngsters have, to shape and impact upon the world in which we all live.
The Problem & The Solution…
It’s not only the younger generation who have little or no understanding of careers in Engineering – only a third of parents actually know what engineers do.
Raising awareness and understanding will increase the desirability of careers in engineering and the initiative aims to do this by:
1. offering hands on and fun experiences of engineering;
2. encouraging families to get involved and ‘take a closer look’ at engineering; and
3. showcasing the variety and creativity of modern engineering.
